In 1971, several area doctors saw the need for
a private facility that would provide abortions for women. Prior
to that time, abortion procedures in Portland and throughout Oregon
were performed at a teaching hospital. There were no guarantees
of privacy, little or no respect for patients, and only after
meeting with a social worker and being labeled "unfit"
to parent was an abortion allowed. This is how Lovejoy was started.
And it was the right thing to do.
We are very proud that Lovejoy is a leader in
women's health care, and the innovation we've shown in reproductive
care and other women's health care needs has taught a generation
of women to expect excellent treatment, informed consent, and
freedom of choice.
