Suction Aspiration
Procedure most commonly used for abortion procedures done using
a light suction.
From 6 - 12 weeks, performed awake or asleep
(with combination pain medications) in one visit. A follow-up
appointment 2 weeks later is recommended.
13 - 15 weeks from the last period; this procedure
takes two days. The first day following counseling and ultrasound,
the physician inserts a small dilator (Laminaria) into the cervical
opening. The next day the abortion is done under general anesthesia
(asleep). A follow-up visit two weeks after the abortion is recommended.
Menstrual Extraction/Manual Aspiration
This procedure is performed beginning 6weeks from when the last
period started through 10 weeks. Procedure can both be done in
one visit, whether done awake or choosing to be asleep. A follow-up
visit 2 weeks later is recommended.
Medical Abortion
Begun as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed through 7 weeks. First
visit includes counseling, ultrasound, physical by MD and injection
of Methotrexate. Five (5) days later at home, Misoprostol tablets
inserted vaginally induces miscarriage. Two follow-up visits are
required.
Dilation and Extraction (D&E)
Abortion procedure done 16 - 24 weeks; this procedure takes two
to three days. The first day following counseling and an ultrasound,
the physician inserts a small dilator (laminaria) into the cervical
opening. The next day the abortion is done under general anesthesia
(asleep) if under 20 weeks. If 20 - 24 weeks, the procedure will
be done on the third day. A follow-up visit two weeks after the
abortion is recommended.
Abortion procedure done 21 -25 weeks;
this procedure takes three days. The first day following counseling
and an ultrasound, the physician inserts a small dilator into
the cervical opening. The next day during a brief visit the physician
replaces the dilator with new laminaria. On the third day the
abortion is done under general anesthesia (asleep). A follow-up
visit two weeks after the abortion is recommended.
